NEW ZEALAND CUP.

C.J.C. CARNIVAL. THE OPENING DAY. \ RECENT FORM REVIEWED. With the exception of two events good fields are carded for the opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting at Riccarton to-morrow and some excellent racing should be provided. One Dividend Field. Only five remain in the Spring Hurdles. Morena, who is top-weight, won the Styx Hurdles at Riccarton in August and also scored at Geraldine and South Canterbury. Hounslow finished third to Morena and Nine of Spades on the first day at Geraldine and won on the second, and was runner-up to Morena at South Canterbury. Okopua has little to his credit since winning a minor steeplechase at Riccarton in August, but Sports King was successful over the battens at Ashburton and is a promising hurdler. Those that may be in demand are MORENA SPORTS KING. Tho Spring Plate. The Spring Plate is a mile event for hacks, run at special weights. Silver Scorn won a division of the Longbeach Handicap, six furlongs, at Riccarton in August and the Dunedin Guineas recently, which are her only two starts this season. She will probably be favourite. Minstrel Lad commenced the season with a win in the Maiden Scurry, five furlongs, the Manawatu Hunt, but he was unplaced in his next start. However, he won his next two races on end—the Lansdowne Handicap, seven furlongs, at Masterton, and the Spring Trial Stakes, seven furlongs, at the Wellington spring meeting. He will also have friends. Tout le Mond has not won this season, but is a very' promising sort, who looks likely to be in tho picture. He showed plenty of dash as a two-year-old last season. Irish Lancer won the Kaikorai Handicap* one mile, at the Dunedin winter meeting, while Metal Bird scored over seven furlongs at Geraldine. Helen Gold is reported to be very promising, while Purse looks the most likely of the others. A trio that may appeal are SILVER SCORN MINSTREL LAD TOUT LE MOND. Linwood Handicap. The biggest field of the day is paid up for in the Linwood Handicap. Hurlingham has performed well this season up to seven furlongs, and in his last effort was a good third to The Quorn and Drum Fire in the Ruahine Handicap, six furlongs, at Trentham. Kakara won this event last season and subsequently scored over a mile at Dunedin and six furlongs at Amberley. She has not raced this 6eason, but if at her best should again run well. Normandy won the Woolston Handicap, six furlongs, at Riccarton hist August, which is his best performance this season. Arden's Beauty was second in the Dunedin Guineas to Silver Scorn, and since then won 'two sixfurlong events at Gore. Drum Fire won tho Rimutaka Handicap, seven furlongs, well at Trentham and was narrowly beaten by The Quorn in a six-furlong event on the second day. He will have support. Silver Streak has shown good form recently up to six furlongs, winning two events and being placed on a similar number of occasions. Shamfight and Aga Khan may prove best of the remainder. Most money may go on DRUM FIRE HURLINGHAM NORMANDY. The Chief Event. Gay Crest, the top-weight in the NewZealand Cup, has run well both in this event and the Auckland Cup in previous years, and he will* again take some beatiu,'-, despite his weight. Historic has shown his best form in previous seasons up to a mile and a half, but this season ho won over a mile and three-quarters at Randwick. Concentrate has a second in the New Zealand Cup and a win in the Auckland Cup to his credit. He was taken to Sydney some weeks ago, but went amiss, and it is hardly likely that he will be quite at his best. Arikira has won up to one mile and three furlongs, while Spearful annexed the event last year. Fast Passage was unlucky to be beaten in the Wellington Handicap at Trentham last month, and on the next day she scored over a mile. She has come through a good preparation, and with 8.0 looks to have an excellent chance. Minerval' has raced prominently up to a mile and a quarter this season, while Shatter won the Mipsgiel Handicap and the Timaru Cup, of similar distance, recently, and has been placed in his other two outings. Last season ho finished second to Ramo (who is also engaged) in the Great Autumn Handicap, one mile and a half, at Riccarton. He is greatly favoured in the South and promises to run well. Korokio has scored up to a mile and a half and has done everything right recently, winning three races on end. Red Sun and Chopin may be the most fancied of the others. The public may lend most support tQ FAST PASSAGE GAY CREST SHATTER. The Two-year-olds. The Welcome Stakes looks as though it will be a duel between Red Manfred, winner of the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham last month, and Fracas, who accounted for the Rosen oath Handicap at the same fixture. The Southdown-Guarantee bracket (both winners at Dunedin) will command most attention of the others. They may be backed in the following order, RED MANFRED FRACAS. Apprentices' Plate. Eleven figure in the Apprentices' Plate, and the top-weight, Muff, won the Avonhead Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Grand National meeting, while she was a good third to Shatter and Mount Boa in the Mosgiel Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Dunedin. Locksley was second to Night Flyer over a mile and a quarter at Ashburton, Rocket (who is also engaged) being third. The latter subsequently won over a mile at South Canterbury. Pink Paper was third in a high-weight handicap, one mile, and also in a seven-furlong event at Kurow, and was third in the Kaikorai Handicap, one mile, at Dunedin this season. The principal fancies may be ROCKET LOCKSLEY MUFF. The Stewards' Handicap. As usual, a cood field of sprinters is engaged in the i\:wards' Handicap. Cadland won with 9.8 at Otaki, and despite his failure at Trentham will go well, for he has been galloping attractively at Riccarton. Autopay was third in the Shorts Handicap, six furlongs, to Lightning .March and Silver Ring at Randwick last month, and if he jumps away well may be troublesome. Great Star is a really good all-round sort and was just beaten in the Shorts Handicap at Trentham recently. He will again go well. Silver Ring was a brilliant two-year-old, and after his second at Randwick he should show up. Merry Peel won over a mile at Trentham and he can go a i good six furlongs. La Poupee was narrowly : beaten by Orapai in the Nainai Handicap,' six furlongs, .at the last Wellington meeting, and she, The Quorn and Royal Sceptre may be most prominent of the others. j Some that will carry plenty of money are GREAT STAR CADLAND SILVER RING. The Riccarton Handicap. The day's sport will conclude with the Riccarton Handicap, and the favourite division may be SOME TOFF RANELAGH j NIGHT RECITAL. ' '
