HOOVER AGAIN?
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. ROOSEVELT'S CONFIDENCE. SOCIALIST ALSO PROMINENT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SAN - FRAN-CISCO, October 11. At the time of ■writing the consensus of opinion is that Herbert Hoover will be returned as President, but by a milch reduced majority, although the Democrats, 'who have won many over on the plea of non-partisanship in the present crisis, are confident that Franklin Roosevelt will win by a great majority, especially in many of the Eastern States hitherto regarded as strongholds of Republicanism. Had Hoover entered the fray and got out into the country some months earlier there would have been on doubt about his re-election. This is believed to have been proved by the belated arrival of the President in lowa and other States, where his explanations of the terrific battle fought behind the scenes, in Washington have won many adherents to his cause. Details of how his inner circle succeeded in "saving America" have made him many new friends. Governor Franklin Roosevelt has re- ! turned to Albany, Xew York, after his hurried campaign trip to the Pacific Coast, and he k convinced he will have' no trouble in ousting President Hoover. The Socialist candidate, Xorman Thomas, a brilliant graduate of Princeton University and resident of Xew York, has had a successful tour of the country and thousands were unable to gain admission to two overflow meetings he held in San Francisco. Xaturaliy, he attacked both major parties and claimed! the Socialists were winning their wayi into public favour all over the country. He admitted he did not expect to win, but believed that the number of votes the Socialists polled would be a great revelation to the country.
