NEWMARKET BOROUGH
A meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding. Water Consumption.—The general purposes committee reported that the water consumption for the month of September was 4,914,000 gallons, compared with 5,376,000 for the same month of last year. Dangerous Corner. —On the motion of Mr. L. G. Michaels it was decided to request the committee concerned to inquire into the desirability of improving the footpath at the corner of Carlton Road. Finances. —The balance-sheet for the half-year ending September 30 showed that rates collected totalled £7229, and £273 was allowed as discount. The collection of rates was described by Mr. R. E. Newport, chairman of the legal and finance committee, as very gratifying. In the matter of expenditure the position wae satisfactory, and it was expected that the position at the close of the year would be within a reasonable distance of the budget figures.
