AUCKLAND CENTRE. SEASON'S SPORT REVIEWED. The Auckland Swimming Centre's report to be presented at the annual meeting at l ; the Y.M.C.A. to-night states that the_li)3l-«. season was as successful as could have been wished, and that prospects are bright. During the season ten clubs affiliated, this being one fewer than the previous season. The Pukekohe Club was unable to "carry on. Although, in some instances financial loss was sustained on carnivals held by some clubs, the swimming, attained a very high standard, all races being keenly °°Twb- carnivals, senior and &nd intermediate, were held at the Tepid Baths previous to the departure of representatives to the New Zealand championships. Both proved to be a great success financially and competitively. ..i. - . .. The centre achieved success with both senior and junior teams at the New Zealand championships. The senior championships were held at Timaru, the team retaining the Yaldhurst Shield with a total score of 56 points. The individual holders of the championships were as followG. Bridson, 100 yards, 220 yards free style; Miss M. Farquhar, 100 yards, 220 yards- free stvle, 100 yards backstroke; Miss P. Robertson, 440 yards free style; Miss. M: O'Meara, 220 yards -breaststroke. The junior and intermediate championships were held in Wellington, the team succeeding in bringing back- the War Memorial Shield with seven points, after a lapse of four years. The individual holders of the championships were as follows:— Intermediate ■ N. Crump, 100 yards, 2-0 yards, 440 yards free style; Miss 'N. T.udiow, 220 yards free style; Miss J. Webster. 75 yards breastroke. Juniors: Miss E. Rainey, 50 yards; Miss.C. Watters,. 50 yards breaststroke.. Good work was done by the Educational Department, which issued 2785 certificates. The centre" should be gratified to know that so many children on leaving school are qualified swimmers. The Auckland Primary Schools' Swimming Association could be thanked for the wonderful work that had been done since its inception, issuing this season 800 certificates. The educational officers for Auckland (Mr. C. P. Stratford), { Dargaville and Whansrarei had carried on the works in their districts with marked success. The past season was the third one in which the control of water polo had been under the jurisdiction of the Auckland Water Polo Control Board, and this body was to be congratulated on the able njanner in which it managed the affairs of this important side of swimming. Two competitions, senior and junior, were played during the season, both being won l>y the Ponsonby Club. ■ i A child of one year should have a vocabulary of seven words, and at two years it should be able to juggle at least 328 words.
