SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Henderson bowling and croquet clubs held a card party and 500 tournament m aid l of its funds, in the pavilion, on Tuesday night. The winners were: Mrs. Gordon Chrippes arid Mr. Hovey Brookes; hidden numbers, Mr. Dalley.

At the recent meeting of Uia Auckland District Federation of Women's Institutes the fact that some members did not consider the English Constitution democratic was not referred to by the president, Mrs. Irwin, but by Mrs. Treby in her address on the recent conference in Wellington.

The Grey Lynn Ex-Servicemen's Club held their second ladies' night in St. Columba Hall, as a social and old-time and modern dancing, "while card games were also enjoyed. The prizes were presented by Dr. Kenrick, president of the club. The ladies provided supper.

A card , party and 500 tournament in aid of the Henderson Catholic Church, was held on Monday night in the school, about 40. persons being present. The "winners were, Mrs. Fitzsymonds and Mr. Antonia Garelja ! j hidden numbers, Mrs. Hallas.

Mrs. Donovan presided at the monthly meeting of the women's division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, at Te Aroha. Mrs. Ennis, of Morrinsville, gave an exhibition of fancy work with the sewing machine. Satisfactory business was done at the sales table. The hostesses, for the afternoon were Mesdames Waugh, Gillan and Death.

A pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mrs. E. T. Allen, Bell Road* Remuera, on Saturday, when Mr. Maurice Hurfit was given a party in honour of his 21st birthday. The dance room was-'gaily decorated with streamers and novelties. Among the guests were: Mesdames J. Hurfit, ■ Somerville, Dickie Allen, Orme, Enid Milne, Robinson, Misses Carline, M. Little, J. Piggin, Iris Huriit, K. Goldsmith.

On Saturday evening a surprise party was taken to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hughes, Royal Oak, where songs, games and dancing were enjoyed. Amongst those present were Mesdames Gray,' F. Pengelly, Jobson, sen,, G. Greenland,. E. Greenland, T. Clark, Beetson; Jobson, Cluett, Beeby, Herd, G. Gray, L. Timmins, J. Pengelly, J. Glynn, and Miss Clark.

Mrs. Sloper presided over the October meeting of the Tokoroa branch of the women's division of the Farmers' Union. It was decided to hold a bazaar in December to raise funds for the branch and the local hall. An instructive lecture on artificial respiration was given by Mrs. Peoples, to which the older boys and girls from the Tokoroa school had been invited. At the close of the lecture the various methods described were demonstrated. Numerous goods were displayed for sale on the exchange table, and another table was well supplied with garments for Sister Esther in Auckland. Afternoon tea was supplied by Mesdames Wallace, E. At the annual meeting of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Ladies' Guild, Dargaville, Mrs. N. 0. White presided. Reference was made to the death of former members, Mrs. W. McHaffie and Mrs. White, sen. The election resulted as follows: —President, Mrs. A. C. Nicol; vice-presidents, Mesdames A. Gordon, T>. Condon and F. Ne-wland; secretary, Mre. H. Mawson. Preliminary arrangements were made for a garden fete, to be held at Mrs. H. Smith's residence, Hokianga Road. • ♦ ♦. • The Belmont Dance Club held a flannel dance on Tuesday evening in the St. Michael's Parish Hall, under the management of Mr. Cecil Eaton. Excellent music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Buckley's orchestra, -the members of which gave their servictSs. Amongst the ladiee present were: Meedames Eaton, Seagar, Harrison, Smith, Woodward, Law, Powell, Rambaud, New, Piggot, Thomas, Pollard, the Misses Tucker, Platt, Burgess, Pallett, Woodward, Dance, Harris, McCullough, Lawrence. * • * • The final of a series of bridge afternoons was held at the Farmers' tearooms on Wednesday in connection with the Mount Eden branch of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary. Mre. E. C. Turner acted as hostess. Those present were:— Mesdames E. C. Turner, D. Clayton, E. Rich, R. A. Vibert, N. Campbell, L. Frith, C. Jamieeon, G. Campbell, S. Sheldon, Rep:. C. -Hooton, F. A carnival dance was held in the St. Francis Hall, Point Chevalier, last Monday evening, to mark the occasion of the final of the quick-step competition. Mr. Carlton acted as judge. The result was a dead-heat between Mr. E. Cameron and Miss M. Barret and Mr. G. Lanigan and Miss .G. Culliford. Among those present were Mesdames Mclntyre, Goffin, Findley, Kelly, Mannix, Edwards, O'Sitllivan, Misses I. Taylor, I. Healey, A. Harris, G. Clarke, T. Lanigan, M. Young, J. Taylor, H: Gates, Z. Higgins, J. Harlo, M. Glover.

A bridge party in aid of Plunket funds was given by Mrs. Ralph White at her home, "Ngatariuga," Norwood Road, Bayswater, on Tuesday evening. The rooms were charmingly decorated with masses of spring flowers, and tha received her guests wearing a frock of shell pink net mounted on crepe de chine. Prizes were won by Mrs. Hayward and Mr. Reid, and over £2 was collected for the funds. Among- the players were Mesdames Easson, Collinson, J. McEldowney, Iscmonger, H. McDuff, F. E. Gaudin, Pierce, F. Pullen, C. Knight, W. Whije, Piercy, L. Rabbidgo, Waddell, A. Rainger, Reid, Boak, sen., Oscar Boak, Ward, Davies, Hayward, Brawnd, Pirrit, Sussex, Frances, Misses McEldowney arid Forsyth.

The Mount ' Eden branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union held its annual meeting on Tuesday afternoon. Two junior members Of the branch were congratulated on ' their success in the recent Band of Hope examinations. An afternoon for cradle roll members and mothers was arranged for next week, Officers elected for the ensuing year are: President, Mrs. Stowards; vice-president, Mrs. Wildish; recording secretary, Mrs. Johnston; corresponding secretary, Miss Tattersall; treasurer, Mrs. Moir; cradle roll, Miss Tattersall; white ribbon, Miss Perkins; press reporter, Mrs. Carter. A solo by Mrs.. Taylor was- enjoyed by all, and afternoon tea closed, a pleasant gathering.

The Problem Club held a bridge evening on Tuesday. • The hostesses were Mesdames Williams and Robb. Pmes were given by the club and Mrs. Powell, Mesdames Duggan and James being the winners. The annual dance of the Clevedon Golf Club was. largely, attended, and the local hall was decorated with maroon and gold streamers and Chinese lanterns for the occasion. The trophies won during the season were presented by the vice-president, Mr. R. L. Waters, in the absence of the president, Mr. D. M. Bryan. They were: Championship cup (women), Miss E. Matthews; championship cup (men), J. Alexander; captain's trophy (women), Miss Waters; captain's trophy jmen), T. Currie; vicepreeident's trophy, R. Wells.

An invitation social and musical evening was given by the Henderson Musical and Dramatic Society, in the Foresters' Hall, on Saturday night. The early part of the evening was given to music, vocal and instrumental, the contributing artists being Mesdames Gilbert and Hutchinsqn, the Misses Roberts and Parr, and Messrs. R. Carey and E. Hocken, and an instrumental trio, consisting of Mrs. C. M. Spencer, Mrs. Sache and Miss P. Roberts. The musical society, under the. conductorship of Mr. W. Haythornthwaite, rendered several part songs.

The Dargaville branch, of the women's division of the Farmers' Union held their meeting in the Municipal Hall, when Mrs. R. E. Clements occupied the chair. Meedames R. E. Clements and J. H. Clayton, delegates to the North Auckland Executive Council, gave a resume of the business discussed at the meetin" held at Ohaeawai. The competition, something new. from eomething old, was won by Mrs. Morgan-Richards, Mrs. J. H. Meale gaining second place. Lunch was served by the hostesses, Mesdames S. McCullogh, Morgan, Richards, J. Barry and G. Druitt.

A musical recital was given on Tuesday evening by the pupils ,of Madame Humphrey-Steward, Devonport, which received an enthusiastic reception. Miss Alye Moncur sang "The Lost Chord" (Sullivan), by special request, and the aria, "O Love, From . Thy. Power" (Saint-Saens); Miss Norma Stevens sang "Carmena" (Lane Wilson); and Mist Elsie Eell-Booth sang "Under the Deodars" (Moncton) and "Vagrant Song" from "Carmen." Other performers were: Lai Paice, Dorothy Wright, Margaret Brunker, Gladys Barton,°Edith Smith, Greta Monroe, Doreen Atkins, Diane Greening, Ivy Stevens; piano eolos, Beatrice Lowe, Marie Spicer, Dorothy Smith; duets, Sybil and Norma Stevens, and Gladys Barton and Alys Moncur. Miss Lalla Hemus, 'cellist, assisted with a 'cello solo, "Romance," by Saint-Saens, and the accompanists were Miss Betty Gurr and Madame Humphrey-Steward.

A successful at home was given by th« chairman and committee of the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society at their rooms, Grafton Road, last evening. The programme presented was given by the "Good Companions* Concert Company. The pierrote were: Misses Ethel Rae, Sybil Phillips, Allie Deacon, Gladys. Ryan, v Gladys' Fowler Messrs. C. Prime, Stewart, Lyttleton, and H. Johnston.. Mrs. Charles Prime was the accompanist. An exhibition dance, entitled "The Gladiators," was given by Miss Joyce Wright and Miss Lois Hammer.
