FOR CONSCIENCE SAKE.
DEBT PAID AT GISBORNE.
AFTER TWENTY , YEABS. UNEMPLOYMENT FUND BENEFITS. , <By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. The payment of a debt to everyone except the debtor himeelf was the strange experience of >the management of the well-known Gisborne firm Pettid and Company. Yesterday payment was made in cash which contained in an envelope with the following typewritten, note: "Conscience, money. Over 20 ,years ago a hearth, rug was bought from Pettie and Company by me and entered. I was never charged with it and am now, anxious to pay the debt. I am not sure .whether it was £2 12/6 or '£1 12/6, but to make sure of getting free from your debt' I enclose £2 12/6 so as to be on the safe side. Anonymous." An official of the firm stated that the records of the debt were probably buried in the archives of the firm, and as the personnel had changed in the past. 20 years, there was no means of making payment available to those to whom it was due. In consequence it had been decided to hand the amount to the Mayor's unemployment fund. *
