ENTICING CRICKETERS.

VIEWS OF N.Z. PRESIDENT. A MENACE TO SPORTSMANSHIP. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, tMs day. Strong support for the views expressed by Mr. Dan Reese (ex-president of the New Zealand Cricket Council) on what he termed "unabashed enticement of New Zealand players to English professional clubs" was expressed by Mr. T. H. Bates, of Taranaki, who is president of the New Zealand " Cricket Council. He was very surprised to see the comment on Mr. Reese's remarks made by W. E. Merritt. That player's statement "that the New Zealand Cricket Council could not put bread and butter into his mouth" would not bear very close examination when it was remembered that without the council's financing of New Zealand cricket tours to England Merritt would never have received the offer of a professional.engagement. Mr. Bates stated that the raid being made by English professional clubs on New Zealand players had now reached the stage of being a menace to international sportsmanship, and the New Zealand Cricket Council should take steps to counter it.
