FAIRY PEDLAR PAINTING COMPETITION

HEAVY ENTRIES RECEIVED FROM JUNIORS, POSTER COMPETITION ARRANGED FOR NEXT WEEK. Dear Boys and Girls, —• A great many young New Zealanders took up paint brushes-or' crayons to colour the drawing of the Fairy Pedlar which'appeared in the" Budget a fortnight ago. Entries were received in good numbers for both sections, although the juniors' contributions were more than double those submitted by the seniors. In section A the standard of work was very fair, an outstandingly good entry being submitted by Joan McLaren, a 15-year-oid Dominion Road reader. Her colours were well chosen and blended harmoniously, whilst considerable effort was iriade to mould the figures and make them sitand out from the background. Esme Quick's second prize-winning painting was clean in outline, neatly done, and fully deserved the award. Shading of the figures was the strong point in Zela Carter's picture. A. J. W. Lowden, Joyce Wilson and Dorothy Carter were the. other competitors who earned cash prizes. In the junior section the work was exceptionally good, and some very nice paintings were received. A ten-year-old, Lilac Elliot, was placed first upon the list of paint box winners. Nancy Parkes, age B,.,came second, whilst another little eight-year-old, Christine Smith, was awarded third place. Her painting was enclosed in a frame made of glass and thin leather-like material called passe-partout. Robin Waine received the last of the boxes of paints, and his entry, too, was very well done. A novel competition has been arranged for next week, boys and girls being given the opportunity of -■' making posters from advertisements " J^«*^^^ which appear in the "Auckland Star." V\/y. Full i particulars for this competition i vf/)//lX \ are given in the announcement which ' appears elsewhere on this page. \Z*"*"^
