REBUFF TO LABOUR.

Parliamentary Aid Declined

By Unemployed.

PRESENTATION OF PETITION.

(British Official Wireless.) (Received 1 p.m.)

RUGBY, October 31. Great interest is being taken in the forthcoming non-party debate on unemployment in the House of Commons. The motion on which the debate will take place has not yet been determined, but it ia to be of a non-committal character, and there is no desire by the Opposition to regard it as a vote of censure. The sole object is that -the members of all parties should pool their ideas of the methods of helping to deal with unemployment. Mr. J. McGovern (Lab., Shettleston. Glasgow), who intends to present the petition asking leave for a deputation of the unemployed marchers now in London to be received at the Bar of the House, stated in the Commons that the organisers of the marchers refused to provide a deputation for this purpose. He'added that although the co-operation of the Independent Labour party had been rejected, they would still continue in their own way to work on behalf of this unfortunate section of society. The leaders of the unemployed marchers movement desire to present a large petition to Parliament asking for the withdrawal of the means -fcest and the restoration of economy cuts, at the same time , persuading Parliament by their own efforts to receive a deputation at the Bar of the House. Sir John Gilmour, Home Secretary, informed Mr. G. Lansbury, Leader of the Opposition, that 8000 people were present in Trafalgar Square at the demonstration on Sunday, including a large number of spectators despite the police appeal to the public not to attend such gatherings. Members of one contingent were searched and four were arrested for carrying weapons.
