PERJURY CHARGE.

<EYE-WITN£SS> FOUND GUILTY EVIDENCE IN COLLISION CASE. Ernest Cheadle, aged 30, carrier and contractor, charged with committing perjury, was last evening found guilty by the jury. Mr. Justice Herdman remanded him for sentence. The case for the Crown was that Cheadle gave evidence as an eye-witness during the hearing of a civil claim for damages in the Supreme Court on August 12. The claim concerned a collision in Symonds Street, and Cheadle gave evidence on oath that lie saw it, whereas, as a matter of fact, he was not' present and was nowhere near the scene of the accident. During the hearing yesterday morning it was stated that the insurance company had not paid the damages. The cheque was ready, but. would not be handed over until payment was legally authorised. A new trial of the civil action is to be applied for. Addressing the jury,-Mr. Allan Moody asserted that this was a case of an insurance company trying to avoid its responsibilitiee. Summing up, his Honor said no jury bad a more serious and important case to consider during the present sessions. The suggestion had been made by the Crown that there had been a conspiracy to procure a verdict in the civil case by means of false evidence, and that accused had been a willing tool in that conspiracy. His Honor pointed out that the evidence of Andrew Sinkovich, the principal witness, had been confirmed by a number of other witnesses.
