BLAZING SUGAR CAME.

FIJI TOWN ENDANGERED. FORTUNATE CHANGE OF WIND. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, October 27. The town of Namoli, which is really the general part of what is more commonly known as Lautoka, the site of the second biggest sugar mill in the world, owned entirely by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Ltd., had a very narrow escape from destruction recently owing to. a 40-acro field of sugar cane being swept by fire. For a time everyone believed the town would perish, as there are no fire-fighting appliances. The heat was so great that many stores had to shut their doors and put up shutters to save the glass windows. The cane field runs alongside the main road of Namoli, while the other side is crowded with all sorts of shops, kept by Indians and Chinese. Happily the wind changed and disaster was averted.
