STRUGGLE IN NEWTON.

MAN'S ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE.

After a violent struggle in Great North Roiid at 1.30 this morning, Constable Stewart, of the Newton police, effected the arrest of a young man suspected of attempting to break into two shops. The arrest was made after the suspect had bolted from him.

Constable Stewart was cycling along Great North Road towards Surrey Crescent on his beat when he noticed a movement in the doorway of a confectioner's shop, 50, Great North Road. He continued on a short distance past the shop, then turned round sharply and returned to the doorway. A young man stepped out and said, *Soineonii has tried to break into *;he shop. A chap just told me he hoard a crash somewhere round here."

Constable Stewart noticed that the young man had hie right hand in his pocket, from which a handkerchief was protruding. The handkerchief appeared to be wound round bis hand. The constable approached the man, and felt something hard in his pocket. On examining the door of the shop he discovered that a pane of alongside the patent lock, had been broken. He detained the man and took him to the edge, of the footpath in order to hail a taxi which was approaching. Here, the man made a dash to get away. After a short chase Constable Stewart caught hie man, but the latter resisted •violently. In the struggle, it is alleged, a pair of "dogs," used in tramway construction work, fell from the suspect's pocket. The man arrested was taken to the Newton police lock-up. He explained to the constable that he had taken a young woman home to Bright Street, and, when returning, went into the doorway of the confectionery shop to tie his boot lace. Afterwards, Constable Stewart found that an • attempt had been made to enter another shop at 08, Great North Road. Suspect Remanded. The suspect, Edward McFarland (23), a seaman, .appeared ill the Police Court thin morning before Mr. F. K. Hunt, SM. He was charged with attempting to break and enter the shop of Nellie Stone, SIS, Great North Koad, with intent to commit a crime; attempting to break and enter another shop at 08, Great North Road, and, further, with being a rogue and vagabond, found by night in possession of houscbreaking implements.
