! In Anglo-Saxon times a "gemot" was a meeting. The Parliament was "witenagemot"—the meeting of the wise men. In legal circles the word "moot" was used for students' debates on supposed cases. Hence, a "moot" case, or point, is a case which is open to debate — an unsettled question.
