STABLE AND TRACK NOTES,

HAS SHOWN SPEED,

BRED THE RIGHT WAY. Among the yearlings running in the Elderslie Stud paddocks is a good-looking colt, owned by Mr. J. M. Samson. He is by Lord Warden from Red Jazz, by Solferino from Tango, by Yasco from Stepka, by St. Leger from Stepfeldt. This family has produced some great performers, Elevation, Reputation and Rapier being three notable stayers. SETBACK TO FOREIGN QUEEN. During the past few days the speedy Foreign Queen has been suffering a slight ailment, which was responsible for her defection at Napier Park. However, the Mercian King filly is now making good headway towards recovery, and may yet be able to make the trip to Avondale, where she is engaged in the Champion Hack Plate on the opening day. A CONSISTENT FILLY. The success recorded by Palantua in the Trial Stakes at Dunedin was that filly s second win this season and she is evidently a bit above te average over sprint distances. Her dam. Mantua, was a smart performer in the South some seasons ago, and, judging by the progress Palantua has made since the new season began, further victories look assured for her, providing she retains her present form. FIRST WIN FOR TWELVE MONTHS. Tippling, winner of the Maungatua Handicap at Dunedin yesterday, was making hia first appearance since he raced on the game course last February. He is a live-year-old gelding by Tippler from Sweet Form and had not won a race since he scored in the Gore Cup just on twelve months ago. Tippling stays on better than most hacks racing at the present time and is likely to win in better company before the season is over. WAIKATO HUNT CANDIDATE. Absent, who is engaged in hunters' events at the Waikato Hunt meeting, was indulged in some schoolipg at headquarters yesterday morning, giving his usual safe display. He went once round over four hurdles and afterwards cleared the steeplechase fences on the flat without making a mistake. E. C. Rae lias the roan gelding looking in first-rate condition, and it woul'd be pleasing to see that trainer meeting with a change of luck. TO CONTEST FLAT EVENTS. During the past couple of weeks Claremore has accomplished a lot of solid work over a distance and looks an improved horse in every respect. He will bo competing in flat events at Avondale, and. it he continues to train on as at present his prospects will have to be considered. J-j llß horse has not had a race for some months, and if he fails to win a stake at the coming meeting his turn may come before the season is much further advanced. TWO PROMISING JUVENILES. The two juveniles Solomon and Glen Romney are doing well at headquarters and both youngsters have displayed promising speed over a few furlongs. Solomon, a bold-looking two-year-old, who promises to turn out above the average, is engaged ip the Avondale Stakes, and Glen Romney has also been paid up for in the same event. If both youngsers go to the post I they should acquit themselves in a creditable manner.

The Kilbroney—Miss Hazel gelding in A. Kemp's stable has done well during the short time he has been in work and should be ready to race at the country meetings later on in the season. Like the majority of Kilbronev's progeny, tins four-year-old is built on lines and may require a bit of time before he is properly seasoned. He has been given several sprints over a few furlongs recently and has shoirn enough speed to warrant his owner persevering with him.
