RESIGNATION.
FEDERAL MINISTER.
Disagreement on Reduction of Allowances. POLICY NOT INVOLVED. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The "Daily Canberra correspondent reports • that the Minister of Commerce, Mr. C. A. Hawker, resigned from the Lyons Cabinet early this morning. For some tirne Mr. Hawker has had differences with his colleagues on the exchange question. He later voted against the Government on an amendment to the Financial Emergency Bill. The "Sydney Morning Herald" Canberra representative says Mr. Hawker announced that he had resigned owing to a disagreement on the question of the further reduction of allowances to Ministers. He emphasised that there had been no disagreement on any matter relating to policy. Mr. Hawker voted for Mr. Gabb's amendment to reduce the salaries of Senators and members of the House of Representatives to £000, which was defeated by 55 votes to 8.
