40-HOUR WEEK.
Italian Proposal to Absorb Unemployed. BRITISH OPPOSITION., (Received 12 noon.) GENEVA, September 22. The governing body of the International Labour Office decided by' 10 votes to 7 to adopt the Italian Government's proposal to place on the agenda for the next session of the conference the question of a universal 40-hour week with the object of absorbing unemployed. It was also resolved to hold a preparatory conference at Geneva in January to consider technical problems involved and to communicate the conclusions to the governing body which will forward them to the World Economic Cohference. The British Government and the employers' representatives voted with the minority, the former opposing the suggested procedure, and the latter contending that there was no evidence that the reduction of hours would diminish unemployment.
