LEYS INSTITUTE.
DEBATE ON MACHINERY. The Leys Institute Literary and Debating Union held its usual weekly meeting last evening. Mr. K. L. Slyfield, the chairman, introduced the subject of debate, "That the advent of machinery has done more evil than good." The teams engaged in the debate were Messrs. J. C. Black and H. B. Arthur for the affirmative, and Messrs. J. T. Casly and F. W. Castle for the negative. Following the debate and a general discussion, the negathe team were declared the winners. Arrangements were finalised for the Athenaeum Cup debating contest versus the Grey Lynn , Debating Society. Tlip selected teams were announced as f"'lows: —Grey Lvnn, Messrs. R. White, H. Hulquist and P. E. Martin; Leys, Mes"«. ■T. C. Black. G. G. Grant and K. L. Slyfield. The debate is to be held next Tb'nrgday evening in the Leys Hall, when Ore", Lynn will affirm "That physical force i , the ultimate foundation of all authority."
