FIRE BOARD SCHEME.
ONEHUNGA'S OPPOSITION. LEGISLATION TO BE OPPOSED. The proposal to establish a metropolitan fire board was reviewed last night at a meeting of the Onehunga-Manukau Chamber of Commerce. The Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, sakl the Borough Council was opposed to tlie scheme, as under it there wae no guarantee that the cost of the service would not be increased to Onehunga. He could not see how Onehunga would gain any benefit under a municipal fii'c board. On the other hand, it wae probable that the borough would be compelled to replace its 4in water mains with Gin, and adopt the city's standard for Hose couplings and plugs of 2jin against Onehunga's 2Jin. Onehunga was quite satisfied with the efficiency of its own brigado and the council had signified its willingness to allow its brigade to attend any fires in any adjoining district if necessary. Mr. J. E. Green said that if the combined local bodies had only two representatives on the Fire Board, the other bodies would bo able to outvote any candidate from Onehunga. It wae agreed by the chamber that when the bill authorising a metropolitan ftre board conies before the House of Representatives, Onehunga Borough Council should send delegates to oppose the inclusion of Onehunga in the scheme.
