THISTLE CONTAINED ATROPHINE,

On analysis, ■; the thistle which it is believed was intended for doping Promptitude at the Rosehill races, was found to contain atrophine. The police have .prepared a report which is now being *con•fiidered by. th,e stewards. ...

A cablegram published ■• last ' Monday stated that a sensation was caused at the Rosehill races : pn Saturday by a .disclosure after the first division of the High-weight Handicap; won by the New Zealand horse Kodapen, that'an attempt had been made to dope Promptitude, who, dead-heated with Archmel for second placed It was revealed that a stable-boy was handed six £l.notes and a thistle, on condition that lie gave the horse l the thistle. The 'boy ■pofekete* the six £1 notes and tossed the thistle into an outhouse. The thistle, when examined, was found to contain mysterious crystals, plugged into the stalk. Atrophine is a powerful poison, but, used it is valuable to dilate the pupil of the eye, Quicken the heart's action, and relieve, cardiac distress, and as. an external application for the relief of pain.
