YOUNG MAN FOR SENTENCE.

Edward John Evans, aged 23, chamber hand, appeared before Messrs. H. J. Da vies and T. H. Geraghty, J.P.'s, at the Onelninga Police Court to-day, charged with forging the name of H." D. Evans to post office withdrawal slips for £35 10/, on Hay 19 last; £30 on May 30; and £5 on June 4. Sergeant S. A. Brown, prosecuted. H. D. Evans, a brother of accused, said he reported the loss of his post office savings bank book from his home. He was then £76 16/8 in credit. Ho recovered the book from his brother in July last. Accused denied at first having the book. About the time the forgeries were committed accused got married, and he was in urgent need of funds. After-' wards he admitted taking the book, and handed it back to witness, whose credit had been reduced to £6 6/8. Accused had since refunded £2 14/6. Witness said the name written on the withdrawal slips was a forgery. He complained to the post office at Onehunga when he lost his book. Two Onehunga. postal, officials gave evidence that accused was the person who presented the withdrawal slips, and received the money. Evans pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed.
