THE LATEST ADDITIONS. FINE MAORI CARVING. At the monthly meeting of the council of the Auckland Institute and War Memorial Museum yesterday afternoon, when Mr. A. G. Lunn presided, sympathetic reference was made to the death of Mr. W. W. Thorpe, of Sydney, who assisted in the arrangement of the ethnographical exhibits when the museum was moved to its present site; and also to the death of Mr. W. Rainger, a member of the institute. Lady Gunson was elected a life member. The president announced that Lad}' Gunson had given £4 towards the cost of the proposed map of New Zealand, and the council would appreciate the act of any other member who would like to follow her example. Mr. C. R. Ford was thanked for his generous assistance with advice about china collections, and the council elected him honorary curator of that branch. Mrs. A. T. Pycroft, who had some admirable paintings in the botanical exhibition some months ago, offered. to paint some suitable native subject on china for the museum collection. The offer was accepted with thanks, and a committee set up to choose the subject. The council unanimously supported the protest of the Institute of Horticulture against interfering with Waipoua Forest, and suggested that the area to be set aside as inviolable should bo 30,000 acres! Valuable Gifts. The director, Mr. Gilbert Archey, re.ported that during the past month gifts to the museum had totalled 48, making 513 for the year. A valuable addition to the Maori collection was' a carved door lintel or pare from the Rotorua district, presented by Mrs. A. A. Edger. Mr. J. A. Thomson presented a greenstone pekapeka; Mrs. Osborne, a canoe paddle and a kahawai hook; Master Brian Mahon, a greenstone pendant; and a fishing weight was given by the Barrington children. Other gifts included stone adzes from Mr. J. Perano and Mr. J. Haynes; and a knapping stone from Mount Roskill, given by Mr. G. A. Fleming. The Rev. Mr. Avery gave a stone chisel and a fishing float; and Captain Humphreys-Davies a gold lacquer panel. Additions to the natural history collection included an exceptionally iargo specimen of the travally from North Cape from Mr. G. J. Rust, and an unusual snapper specimen from Mr. J. T. Cole. Mr. Adam Blackwell presented a collection of rock pool fishes and Crustacea from Great Barrier Island, and Mr. W. Foster some exceptionally fine specimens of coral and deep-water marine growih secured from the cable between j Australia and New Zealand. I
