NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding. St. John Ambulance Appeal.—Permission was granted to the St. John Ambulance Association to hold a street collection on October 7. Water Supply.—The Auckland City Council wrote asking local bodies drawing their supplies from the council to furnish estimates of water requirements and contract for same up until 1950. " I think the water board will be established, and I do not see how they are going to separate a water board from a drainage board," said Mr. Donaldson. The matter was referred to the general purposes committee. ONE TREE HILL COUNCIL. Members of the One Tree Hill Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, presided. Fire Insurance. —Advice was received that the council's fire insurance premiums, as from the present month, would be subject to a special discount of 50 per cent, instead of 12Vs per cent, as at present operating. Water Rates.—On the subject of the pending test case concerning the payment of overdue water rates on Crown properties the town clerk, Mr. A. Leesc, reported that he had supplied certain information to the Municipal Association's solicitor, as requested. Everything, he understood, was now in readiness for the defence of the action. Building Figures.—The building inspector reported that during the past fortnight five permits, totalling £176. had been issued. Since the beginning of the year 66 permits, of a total value of £5531, had been issued.
