ART IN AUCKLAND.

MB, HIFWELL'S EXHIBITION.

VALUE OF "FIGURE DRAWING. A show of water colours, drawings, and engravings, by Mr. Arthur C. Hipwell, was opened this afternoon at the rooms of the.Auckland Society of Arts by the president of the society, Dr. E. B. Gunson. The president said he was glad to welcome Mr. Hipwell as an exhibitor, and particularly as an exhibitor of a one-man show. It was the policy of the society to encourage its working members to make one-man or collective shows of art that was representative and that justified the society in giving its approval. Mr. Hipwell started his career at the Canterbury Art School under Mr. Archibald Niccol, had opportunities for furthering his studies in Europe during and after the war, and was now living in Auckland. They were glad to know that he had developed to the extent that was indicated by the excellent exhibition. Mr. Hipwell had become associated with the council of the society when the big purchase of pictures for the Mackelvio Gallery was under consideration by a special committee, and it was felt that on that occasion the advice given by Mr. Hipwell was very sound indeed. Dr. Gunson spoke highly of the water colours shown by Mr. Hipwell, and drew attention to the number of admirable woodcuts, and Professor Worley, a working members of the society, also congratulated Mr. Hipwell.
