GANDHI REFUSES.

WILL NOT LEAVE GAOL

Hope for Settlement of Hindu / Problem. PRISON DISCUSSIONS. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 10 a.m.) CALCUTTA, September 20. Gandhi began his fast at noon. He has not been released from gaol, as he refused to accept the Government conditions to restrict his movements.

The Government will allow him full freedom in gaol for discussions with Hindus with a view to a settlement of the caste problem. Dr. a high caste Hindu leader, and Mr. Jayakar, declare they are hopeful of a settlement during the week-end.

In an interview in gaol Gandhi revealed a modified attitude on the electorates issue. Practically he agreed to consider any alternative proposal which would not provide separate electorates for the depressed classes.

He receded from his former firm stand against the reservation of. seats in joint electorates.

Gandhi's new proposals will be placed before the leaders of the Hindus and depressed classes at noon to-day. The cordiality with which the problem was discussed at a meeting yesterday gives hope of an early settlement.
