TRAINING COLLEGE SURPRISE MANUKAU.

A surpise win was registered by Training College against a weakened Manukau team at the Show Grounds on Saturday. The score was 16 points, consisting of four tries, two of which were converted, to three, a penalty goal. Tries were scored by Heeps (2), Crossman and Goodwin. Townsend kicked the goals for Training College, and Berrldge kicked a goal for Manukau. Tliere was a gool deal of bright play In the match. Both sets of backs threw the ball about a lot, but the tactics were different. Whereas the ball went from back to back across field on the Manukau side, the Training College players ran straight. It is true they were often held up, but on many occasions broke through. They also had the advantage that their hookers had more than a fair share of the ball in the scrum. The College forwards held the Manukau forwards in packed work, and were more mobile In the loose. The heavy Manukau pack were at a disadvantage in fast loose work. A feature of the game was. the speed with which thej College backs got into action. Their ground fielding was remarkably clean and smart.

Of the College backs Lewis was very sure at full-back. His marking of high kicks was a valuable feature for his side. Keenan at centre theree-quarter played one of his best games, and he had a hand in the tries scored by his wings, Heeps and Goodwin, who each displayed scoring ability. Townsend did well at second fiveeighths, and Crossman was clever behind the scrum. The most noticeable of the College forwards were Spooner, Dare and Wellington.

For Manukau, among the backs, Berrldge, Stuart and Brimble were the pick. Brimble played a fine game, and did more straight running than his mates. Of the forwards Pearce, Paddy, Kereopa and Scruton played well.
