PUBLIC HOLIDAYS.
OBSERVANCE ON MONDAYS
LOCAL OPINIONS DIVIDED.
Stops were recently taken by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce to ascertain local feeling concerning a suggestion that public holidays that did not fall on a Saturday should be observed on a Monday. When the matter came before the chamber at its meeting this morning, the president, Mr. A. M. Seaman, said that replies received by the chamber revealed a considerable diversity of opinion. Mr. Harvey Turner said that such an arrangement might result, in a great loss in certain perishable lines. He instanced the case of a steamer arriving with a fruit cargo on a Saturday, and her discharge being held up until the following Tuesday. Mr. A. L. Caughey said that the retail drapers of the city would bo against the proposal, as Mondays and Fridays were the best shopping days of the week. It was decided that, owing to the diversity pf opinion, no further action should be taken.
