OBITUARY.

MRS. H. SAVAGE. The death occurred yesterday morning at St. Helier's Bay of Mrs. H. Savage, aged U9 years. Mrs. Savage. arrived in New Zealand in 1886, and had lived in Wellington over since. She is survived by her husband. Mr. H. Savage, of Lambton Quay, Wellington, and her son, Mr. G. H. Savage, of Lower Hutt. MR. G. W. THOMSON. Formerly a farmer at Kaipara Plats for 28 years, Mr. George Wyatt Thomson died at Birkenhead. He Was born in Auckland 70 yeare ago, and at one time had a bakery business at Warkworth. Mr. Thomson took a keen interest in public affairs, and for I a number of years was chairman of the Rodney County Council. He retired from his farm in 1918, and for some years lived at Coromandel. He went to reside at Birkenhead about 12 months ago. Mr. Thomson was an elder of the Presbyterian Church both at Warkworth and Coromandel. MR. E. M. ROPE. One of the old settlers of the Northern Wairoa district, Mr. E. M. Rope, died at Te Kopuru on September 10. He was born in Suffolk, England, 81 years ago, and settled in the Northern Wairoa 5G years ago, and had lived in that district ever since. He was married in 1882 and celebrated the jubilee of his wedding on May 20 this year. He is survived by Mrs. Rope and the following children: Messrs. E. R. Rope, of Te Kopuru; W. R. Rope, of Auckland; B. V. Rope, of Auckland; R. P. Rope, of Te Kopuru; G. A. Rope, of Tuakau; and W. M. Rope, of Wellington; and one daughter, Miss E. C. Rope, of Te Kopuru. Mrs. Rope came to New Zealand 69 years ago. One son, Mr. C. M. Rope, served in the war and was killed in Palestine. MR. WILLIAM J. McWATTERS. One of the last of the early pioneers of the Thames goldfield, Mr. William John McWattere, of Tararu Read, died on September 12. at the great age of 96 years, after a residence in New Zealand of 69 years. Mr. McWattere was probably the last survivor of the Thames battery amalgamators, a class of experts who, in the early days of the field, were of considerable importance to the successful treatment of quartz. He was one of the diggers who joined the rush to Thames when the goldfield was opened in 1867. Prior to that he owned a cutter with which he traded to Thames. Born at Glencoe, near Belfast, Ireland, Mr. McWatters arrived in Auckland in the ehip Cairngorm in 1863, and for a time was carpentering at Whangaparaoa Peninsula, opposite Tiritiri. He left that to sail a cutter in the coastal trade, until he took up mining at Thames. He was at one time manager of the Missouri battery. He also supervised, as county foreman at one period, the making of the road from Thames to Waikawau. Mr. McWatters is survived by the following children: —Messrs. William McWatters, of Taumarunui; Alexander McWatters, of New South Wales; David McWatters, of Paeroa; Mesdames Paterson and Lamb, of Auckland; Jenkinspn, of Paeroa; and Misses Jessie and Lillian McWatters, of Thames. There are 23 grandchildren and eix great-grand-children. MR. ARCHIBALD J. SULLIVAN. DUNEDIN, this day. Tho death has occurred of Mr. Archibald J. Sullivan, aged 63, who was elected treasurer of the Dominion Bowling Council in 1930. He was an exinsurance manager, city councillor and Otago Rugby footballer. MR. H. SUTHERLAND VALENTINE. DTJNEDIN, this day. The death is reported of Mr. Hugh Sutherland Valentine, at the age of 84 years. He was formerly general manager of the New Zealand Agricultural Company and was elected member of I the House of Representatives for Waikaia ill 1887 and Tuapeka in 1890. He had the distinction of being a life fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute, a life fellow of the Geographical Society, a life member of the London Chamber of . Commerce and a member of the Royal I Agricultural Society, England.
