SICK WOMAN ROBBED.

MONEY UNDER PIIXOW. OFFENDER GRANTED PROBATION. "Thia was a very mean theft—robbing a eick woman—and you really deserve six months' imprisonment, but as the probation officer recommends another chance, I am giving it to you," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., to Hazel Ivy Kite, aged 40, at the Police Court this morning. Kite pleaded guilty .to charges of stealing a gold brooch, two dresses, corsets, stockings and £1 4/ in money, of a total value of £6 8/5, on August 17, and of stealing a watth valued at £5, belonging to T. W. Whittle, on May 12. Detective Sergeant Kelly said Kite explained that she found the watch in a street in Newton. Even if she did she had no right to keep it. She went to a house at Mount Albert to see a woman named Harwood, who was not there. Another woman was ill in bed, and Kite offered to clean up the house if. the woman allowed her to stay there that night. She agreed and later Kite sat alongside the sick woman, who went to sleep. After awakening she found that £1 4/ in money, which she kept under her pillow, and the other articles mentioned in the charge had disappeared, and so had accused. The stolen articles were pawned for 4/G by Kite, who gave the name of "Mrs. Peters." "This woman Kite has a sturdy list of previous convictions for dishonesty," added Mr. Kelly. Counsel said Kite had been "hard-up" and had yielded to temptation. She was prepared to make restitution. Major Gordon recommended that Kite be leniently dealt with, as she had behaved well while on probation. The magistrate admitted Kite to probation for two years and ordered her to make full restitution.
