SUNDAY SPORTS 237 YEARS AGO.
A Sunday sports license issued by Queen Elizabeth in 1695 runs thus:— To all Mayors, Sheriffs, and Constables: Whereas we are informed that one John Seconton, poulter, being a, poor man, having four small children, and fallen into decay, is licensed to have and use some plays and games upon several Sundays, we will you to take four or five discreet and substantial men where the games shall be put into practice. The games mentioned are "shooting with the standard, shooting with the broad arrow, shooting at the Turk, leaping for men, wrestling, throwing of the sledge (hammer), pitching of the bar."
