N.Z. CUP CANDIDATE.

t PROGRESS OF ANTIQUE. HORSES AT TE AROHA. It ie seldom that Te Aroha can boast tire possession or a ~Ke\v Zealand Cup entrant, but in Antique, who is in this year's list, we have quite a worthy candidate. • He has already shown that he can win over a mile, and a half, and he is quite likely ito stay, out the additional half urile. The fact that, he does not knock himself about.in a race by unduly pulling and reefing will be ill his favour over a long distance. In the meantime it can be said that he is training on very satisfactorily. Arch Eagle has again joined the track workers and is bounding along in good style. His first appearance this season, which will be in the colours of Mr. Cliff Reid, will probably be at Cambridge on Labour Day. . [■ Mungatoon ds reported to be training on nicely at Randwick. It is probable that during this month he will again be raced on "the' other side," but Mr. Swney is desirous of getting him. back to these shores in ample time for the Avondale fixture.

Volimond, looking really well, and apparently sound, has- again joined the track workers. She is working quite as freely as usual, and all going well will be racing again very soon. The latest. addition to J. H. Wallace's team is a two-year-old filly by Cynic— Unique, therefore a half-sister to Antique. She was bred in the Wanganui district and is well grown and developed, j As j - et she has not been brought over to the tracks, as her mentor has no desire to hurry lier. , ■ • The Hunting Song representative Good Run is showing definite improvement, but on account of his size he cannot be expected to strike winning form in the early, part of the season. However, he has the gift of galloping, while bis'truck behaviour is quite exemplary . [■Mr. P. A. Swney has just put into work a 'two-year-old gelding by Acre—Mangamaire. This bay is a sturdy type and well developed for h*v agej with good bone. Haying been wintered well, he hiay be racing well during the summer months. -The .Scherzo— Grey Eagle filly Sehizanthus: is now being moved along in her work and is showing the. possession of appreciable speed. : Since being in A. E. Cox's stable she, has not suffered a setback in any way, and as her conformation does not include any jumber she should be racing to advantage in the early spring. The other members of Cox's team—Gigantic, Bonnie Joyce and the Talkyrian—Keep Watch filly—are progressing very satisfactorily.

Mr. R. B. Hines' trio —Master Brierly, King Musk and King Mestor —are working very consistently and are in really nice trim. They. v will be raced next month. Antique and Good Run ran five furlongs on the extreme outside of the course proper yestenHv morning. The first furl'inn; took los. the second 12 2-os and the full distance 1.10. They finished together, but neithnr was ridden light out.- , Sc-hiznnthus and Keith Hall sprinted three furlongs in I 39 --os, the Scherzo filly appearing; to' advantage and scoring by a length. King Mestor and King Musk put in good nace work, and useful tasks were allotted Voli-j mond, King's Archer, Master Brierly, Arch j Eagle, Bonnie Joyce, and Gigantic. I
