GROUNDING OF BREEZE.

MATE'S CLAIM FAILS. COMPANY OBTAINS JUDGMENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Judgment for defendant was given to-day by Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the case arising out of the grounding of the ill-fated steamer Breeze at Gore Bay in February, in which Charles Alfred Williams, formerly mate of the vessel, claimed from the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, Ltd., £20 for wages, in lieu of a month's notice. Defendants stated that they relied on an alteration of the log-book as evidence of misconduct by plaintiff. The magistrate npheld defendant's contention that plaintiff had been guilty of dereliction of duty. The magistrate remarked that failure to allow for a compass deviation was in itself sufficient dereliction of duty on the part of the navigator to endanger the ship.
