SENATOR TO RESIGN
New Political Scandal in Canada. SHIP'S LOSS IN WAR-TIME. VANCOUVER, August 13. Hance Logan, one of Canada's senior Senators, is resigning, and is facing a prosecution for the return o f Government funds to the amount of £7000. The scandal revolves upon claims paid by the Reparations Commission for tin; alleged destruction of the Nova Scotia steamer, Gypsum Queen, by a German submarine in 1915. The Court finds that the ship disappeared following a storm, and that Senator Logan had guilty knowledge of tile documents claiming that the torpedoing was false. Logan is a picturesque figure, and was very influential during the Laurier regime. Several years ago he negotiated a treaty between, tlie Canadian and West Indian Governments, and it was while returning from Jamaica that he fell in with Captain Hatfield, who formerly commanded the Gypsum Queen. Logan pushed Hatfield's claim for reparations, and himself pocketed half of the £14,000 paid by tlie Government following the decision of the InternationarCourt.
Captain Hatfield disappeared when the investigation recently started.
