INDUSTRIAL UPHEAVALS.
HOW MUSSOLINI WOULD ACT. What would have been the position of Newcastle if, in the vortex of its industrial upheaval some years ago, it had been under the Fascist rule of Mussolini ? Dr. Marie Bentivoglio, B.Sc, D.Phil., in an address on "Fascism" under the auspices of the New South Wales Public School Teachers' Federation, said that the State would have stepped in and said: "The coal industry must progress, otherwise not only it but the State as a whole suffers. This must not be." Mussolini would therefore have demanded that the employers and the employees should meet in conference. If the owners had said, "We cannot do so," Mussolini would have demanded the forfeiture of their rights to the mines. If the miners had adopted the same attitude, Mussolini would have simply put their leaders in prison. And as for the others who would not work —
Dr. Bentivoglio shrugged her shoulders. "Well," she added, "there would be no dole. The preservation of the State is more important than the will of the individual."
