LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

THISTLE CUP CONTEST.

DEVONPORT MEET CITY ROVERS.

The second round of the Auckland Rugby League's competition for the Thistle Cup will be completed to-morrow, and the club matches have therefore reached a very interesting stage, in spite of the lapse of three weeks due to the visit and intermission of the English team. City Rovers made a great recovery in this round, and although well down in the championship, have a chance for honours. A win against Devonport, the championship winners, will put the Rovers on level terms for the Cup. In the first round the worth Shore men won an exciting match by 21—17. Most of the teams will have to field reserve talent, owing to the absence of players down South for the second Test match, whilst it is to be remembered that all teams will still be under observation with a view to strengthening the national side, if necessary, for the third Test to take place at local headquarters the following week. Richmond and Ponsouby will provide the curtain-raiser, and Marists and Newton will play a benefit game at Ellerslie. The former will be strengthened by the inclusion of the South Auckland forward, Laird, but nevertheless, the Rangers will step out with confidence. Teams are:— CITY ROVERS.
