RACING AT RICCARTON. BIIXY BOY WINS STEEPLES. DAINTY WAYS WINS HURDLES. WAIWENE CREATES SURPRISE. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The Grand National meeting opened to-day in fine weather. There was a large attendance and the track was fairly good. , The Opening Event. Pink Note was the early leader in the Trial Hurdles, neither Morena nor Jayson jumping the first hurdle well. Pink Note led past the stands from Dainty Ways and Morena, with Jayson last. They kept in this order to the nine-furlong post, where Pink Note was out three lengths from Dainty Ways, who was four lengths ahead of Morena. Ten lengths away came Jayson. Dainty Ways joined Pink Note at the seven furlong post, aid took the lead a furlong further 011, where Jayson nearly fell. Dainty Ways led for the remainder of the journey from Morena. The leader jumped the last hurdle the better of the pair and won easily by five lengths from Morena, who beat. Jayson by twelve lengths. Pink Note was four lengths away, fourth, with Jael last. An Outsider Scores. In the Paparua Handicap Waiwene, Fair Weather, Belvoir and Taku Tama began smartly. Coming to the course proper Waiwene was leading, closely attended by Belvoir, Last March, Ringing Cheer and Taku Tama. As they straightened up for home Noteworthy fell. Waiwene was clear at the distance, but Water Power threw out a challenge, and in a good finish Waiwene prevailed by a length. Last March was a length away, third. Belvoir was fourth, and then came Taku Tama, Tobacco Land, Fair Weather and Ringing Cheer. The Favourite Scores. Topthorn, Palantua, Execution and Molten were the first to show out in the Cashmere Plate. Topthorn singled himseld out, and held charge coming on to the course proper, Takakua and Porlock falling at this stage. Topthorn came into the straight ahead of Palantua, Molten and Execution. Topthorn and Palantua had a keen struggle to the post, but Topthorn scored by a length. Molten was two lengths away, third, with ' Execution fourth, and then came Tranquility and Worship. Nukumai's Fine Finish. In the Jumpers' Flat Luminary went to the front at .the outset, and made all tlie early running, with the remainder of the field bunched together. Entering the back Luminary was out four lengths from Membo, Captain's Gift and Pahu, who were pretty well in line. Naeeock was last. Ramesee made a fast forward move near the seven-furlong post, and joined Luminary in the lead at the far turn. At the half-mile Rameses was leading by three lengths from Luminary and Naseock. Rameses was first into the straight, but lie then tired. Nukumai and Nassock finished strongly, while Pahu got a run through on the rails. However, lie weakened, and in a fine finish Nukumai won by a short length from Membo, with Nassock a length away third. Pahu was too lengths away fourth, and then came Captain's Gift and Ramesee.
