"HOME BREW" IN NORTH.

CONCERN OF PRESBYTERY, RIVAL TO LICENSED HOUSES. CONDITIONS AT HIKUEANGI. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. The question of prohibition, and also that of "home brew," came before .the North Auckland Presbytery yesterday in a letter from the convener of the Presbyterian Temperance Committee, the Rev. J. R. Blanchard, Wellington, who wrote pointing out the necessity for keeping the matter of prohibition before congregations. The writer suggested that a lighting fund be established preparatory to the next national prohibition poll. He also asked for an expression' of opinion regarding the use of "home brew" in various communities.

The Rev. R. C. Stewart, Hikurangi, said in his district the matter of "home brew" was serious, and constituted a rival to the licensed houses. It was one that was causing him great concern, as his district was feeling the effects of its ramifications.

The Moderator, the Rev. W. Elliott, considered this was not the time to attempt to raiso funds as suggested. Each church was feeling the strain of the economic depression, and it was very difficult to maintain the various mission funds and other activities. He viewed with alarm the increased consumption of "homo brew" among the VJOople.

Mr. M. J. Byrt proposed, and.the Rev. R. C. Stewart seconded a resolution that:—"This Presbytery views with alarm tho_ increaso of 'home brew,' and that all ministers take every opportunity of bringing the matter of temperance before the congregations on Temperance Sunday."—Carried.
