TAKAPUNA SEWAGE OUTFALL.
LEAKAGE IN PIPES REPORTED
CRITICISM BY MAYOR.
In connection with a reported displacement fof . the sewer outfall pipes; which extend nearly 600; feet: into the sea at Blackrock, between Takapuna and Milf ord, two ■ reports were received at last night's meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council.
A diver also. reported to the council that erosion had taken place underneath the iron sewage pipe, which had been forced out of position by successive storms and heavy seas. Two members of the council, Messrs. J. Waddell and L. T. Titchener, recently went down 20 feet in diving suits to inspect the damage done. Mr. Waddell said last night that, although a leak had been discovered, the position was not serious. There was no immediate danger. The Mayor, Mr. Guiniven, said the blame for the trouble belonged : to the council in office several years ago, when the pipe line was' laid. "At the time I said that the pipe line would break, and I urged that a diver should go down to inspect the sea bed before the 26in iron pipe was placed into position, but they would not listen to me," he said. "It is a pity that money was squandered in the past like it was. Now we will have to carry out the work of restoring the pipe line put of revenue, and not out of the sewage loan, which is exhausted."
The matter was referred to tho works committee.
