WITHOUT PERMIT?

EXPORTATION OF-GOLD. AUCKLAND BUYER CHARGED. SEQUEL TO SYDNEY SEIZURE. COINS WORTH £312 INVOLVED. As a sequel to the seizure of over £1000 worth of old gold, jewellery, sovereigns, and half-sovereigns in Sydney recently, and the appearance at the Sydney Police Court last Friday of Percy John Wince, ship's steward, who is alleged to have taken the gold from Auckland to Sydney, George Washington, aged 30, gold buyer, appeared before Mr. W. R. McKcan/s.M., at the Police Court this morning. He was charged with exporting gold—2o7 sovereigns and 210 half-sovereigns—without the consent in writing of the Minister of Finance. Counsel who appeared for Washington said that it would be admitted that accused exported the gold. "However, at this stage I wish to say that I do not admit that this is a matter which can be dealt with by the Court where accused can be ordered to forfeit the gold," added counsel. "The gold has been seized by the Sydney police, and in the meantime an interim injunction has been granted by the New South Wales Supreme Court ou the application to restrain the return of the gold to New Zealand. The matter has not yet been finally dealt'with by the Supreme Court of New South Wales," .. Counsel; added that there ,was no suggestion that the gold had been got-dis-honestly. It had been • obtained by accused in his, legitimate occupation as a gold buyer. • Detective Sergeant Kelly said the matter wasone in" which the Crown-Solicitor at Auckland would have to prosecute,, and he accordingly obtained'a remand for one week. Accused was released on bail of £50.
