IRELAND'S DEMAND. Cheaper and Finer Than Foreign Even Plus Duty. DE VALERA WILL PROHIBIT. (United P.'A.—Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 10 a.m.) DUBLIN, August 3. Despite the 5/ per 'ton duty importer's persist in ordering British coal, because it is superior and cheaper in the long run than foreign. Gas companies say that if they are deprived of British coal they must increase the price of gas.
Mr. de Valera has replied that unless they transfer their orders to the Continent he will impose prohibitive, retrospective duties.
The Free State Senate carried a resolution of Senator Counihan urging the Government immed ately to reopen negotiations with Britain regarding the question of land annuities, the payment of which to Britain the -1c Valera Government has stppped.
