"GLORIOUS FAILURE."
"BILLY" HUGHES ON GALLIPOLI
LONDON, July 29. ■ "Gallipoli was the most glorious failure in history, with a miraculous termination, and its hero was Sir lan Hamilton." So said Mr. W. M. Hughes, ex-Prime Minister of Australia, at the British Empire Service League's farewell luncheon to Sir Granville Ryrie. When he received the notification from the War Office of the intention to evacuate Gallipoli, there was a warning to be prepared for 40 per cent of casualties, he said. News of the evacuation, without a single casualty, was handed to him during his speech on the eve of his departure for England. He was incredulous, and was not satisfied until, having reached his office, he decoded the message for himself. Sir lan, who presided, eaid he noticed that Sir Granville's occupation in "Who's Who" was grazing, which was similar to Nebuchadnezzar's, and it was a coincidence that both captured Jerusalem. He hoped that Australia had a nice paddock ready, for him on his return.
