COROMANDEL PIONEER.

MR. M. FUREY'S DEATH.

The death has occurred of Mr. Michael Furey, aged 89, one of the pioneer settlers of the Coromandel district. Mr. Furey worked in the Thames and Coro•mandel mines in the early days. More recently he resided in Auckland and Waihi. He had an adventurous career, including an exciting meeting with the Australian bushranger "Thunderbolt" and his gang in New South Wales.

DR. F. RATCLIFFE RILEY.

A well-known medical practitioner of Dunedin, Professor F. Ratcliffe Riley, died this week, aged 67. He underwent an operation a fortnight ago. Dr. Riley qualified in ' London. He qualifie ' M.R.C.S. (Edinburgh), L.R.C.P., and F.R.C.S. (London). After his arrival in New Zealand Dr. Riley first practised at Winton, but later moved to Dunedin, where he served as a member of the Hospital Board and the Otago University College Council for a number of years, He was also an elder of Knox Church, and a member of the Dunedin City Council. Dr. Riley was appointed lecturer at Otago University on midwifery and gynaecology in 1909, and at the end of 1929 he became professor in these subjects, retaining this chair until his retirement in February last. He leaves a widow, three sons and one daughter.

MR. THOMAS HUNT.

A pioneer of the Waikato, Mr. Thomas Hunt, died at Te Rapa on August 1, aged 93 years. Born at Dilston, Northumberland, he came to New Zealand with his >rother at the age of 19 years, and landed at Auckland after a voyage of 110 days. They took up a block of land at Mangonui, which they farmed for 17 years. Mr. | Thomas Hunt then moved to the Waikato, where lie bought a farm of 150 acres at the Narrows, a few miles from Hamilton. Later he managed a farm at Te Awamutu for over 15 years, and was for another 20 years on his own property at tile Narrows. At the age of 75 Mr. Hunt gave up active farming and went to live at Te Rapa. He is survived by the following children: Messrs. S. Hunt (Otahuhu), P. Hunt (Fencourt), and I. Hunt (Te Aroha), Mrs. J. S. Fisher (Monavale), Mrs. S. E. Dodd (Hamilton), Mrs. J. Graham (Kaipaki), and Mrs. H. G. Wallace (Tamahere). Mrs. Hunt died four years ago.

MR. A. C. FRETWELL.

Mr. Albert Charles Fretwell, who died at' aged 84 years, spent his younger days in Australia, and came across to New Zealand in the early 'nineties. He had a farm as well as a blacksmith's business in the Hamilton district until 1909, when he bought a virgin section at Waerenga, which he converted into a good dairy farm. Two eons served in Palestine in the Great War. Mr. Fretwell is survived by his wife, four sous and three daughters.

LIEUT.-COLONEL E. 0. CHESNEY,

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. The death occurred suddenly vesterday of Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Oswald Chesney in a private hospital at Lower Hutt. Lieutenant-Colonel Chceney entered the Permanent Force as a cadet in 1900. He saw active service during the war in South Africa and was awarded the Queen's medal with two clasps. During the Great War he went as Brigade-Major with the First New Zealand Infanu.v Battalion and subsequently was assistant adjutant-general with the New Zealand Division. He was on the reserve of officers of the Wellington Regiment. Lieutenant-Colonel Chesney belonged to the Hutt and Wellington Golf Clubs ana for ten yeare was either captain or a:t active member of the committee. Hγ i also belonged to the New Zealand Golf I Council. The interment will be on ■ Thursday afternoon. jU
