MEN REJECT TERMS.
COAL MINES CONFERENCE.
DELEGATE-S TO MEET OWNERS.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
GREYMOUTH, Tuesday.
The terms proposed as a result of the recent conference at Wcstport between the coal miners and the owners for a new agreement covering the West Coast collieries have been submitted to the unions and by them rejected. However, it is hoped that a stoppage of work will be averted, as another conference hae been arranged. ' Interviewed, Mr. W. Purdie, secretary of the West Coast Miners' Council, said the decision had been communicated to Mr. T. 0. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners' Association, with a request for another conference, preferably on the West Coast, to see if an amicable settlement was obtainable, and also a suggestion that work should continue in the meantime under the terms of the old agreement.
In reply Mr. Biehop said the owners had instructed him to state that if the miners send a deputation to meet them in Wellington on Wednesday, August 10, they will permit work to continue under the old terms in the meantime.
It is understood the miners are Bend ing delegates, as the owners suggest.
