• i: The July dinner of the Junior Chamber i of Commerce was held in the Y.M.C.A. on Wednesday, Mr. J. E. Beachen, vicechairman, presiding in the absence of Sir. A. G. Brown. ■ >• The secretary, Dr. E. P. Neale. read a C letter from the United States Chamber n of Commerce which gave particulars of j : the rapid growth of junior chamber " organisations in countries outside the t United States. There were now 14 in ° England, 14 in Canada, one in Mexico, a one in Auckland and one in Perth. t The main feature of the evening was a debate on the proposition that the t Legislative Council should be abolished. J , Mr. E. Aldridge, who acted as judge, and 1 whose constructive criticism was much * {Appreciated, declared that the debate had £ been won by the affirmative by 266 points I to 259. The speakers for the affirmative c were Messrs. H. G. Beechey, A. M. Doull 3? and B. H. Kingston, and for the nega- li tive, Messrs. P. Hayman, C. H. Hirst and fl R. C. J. Smith. The three best debaters J were declared to be Mr. H. G. Beechey, C leader of the affirmative, 87, Mr. C. H. G Hirst 85, Mr. A. M. Doull 84. B a
