"SELLING A HORSE."
SEQUEL TO FOOTBALL SWEEP HOTEL BARMAN PINED £1. "This concerns the crime known as 'selling a horse,' the winner to buydrinks for the crowd. Racehorses are not even suggested in this crime, the shilling contributed by each, man being wagered on the resuit of a football match," said counsel appearing for Arthur Wellesley Austin, hotel barman, who was charged at the. Police Court this morning with, establishing a lottery. "If my client does nothing worse than this, ho" won'b have, any .blemishes on his escutcheon. He has a wife and family of baby Austins," added counsel. Detective Sergeant Kelly said the winner of the sweep was the man who forecast the result of the match. Marist versus Poiisonby, played at CarlawTark. When Senior Sergeant Flanagan later visited the hotel he found 36 shillings in a mug, together with the names of those competing. Defendant said the licensee was not aware of what he had been doing. It was done to please the customers.
"All we -want to do is to show the public tha.t such a lottery is illegal and that hotel licensees must prevent it, said Mr. Kelly.
"Don't do it again. Let this be a warning to you," said the. magistrate, in fining Austin £1.
