THE TRIAL TEAMS.
THREE GOOD SIDES CHOSEN. The Auckland selectors have made a good job of the distribution o£ talent for the three trial teams, including that to meet South Auckland. Naturally the side to uphold the city's prestige is strongest, but not necessarily the best that can be fielded. It is open to question whether Cooke (Richmond) should have been given preference over Brimble (Newton), Hassan (Marists) or Johns (Richmond). Brimble is remarkably speedy off the mark, having developed into a class player this season. Many would like to see Hassan tried in the line, whilst Johns has also shown possibilities. However, it will be interesting to see how the Rugby Union international links up with the Rugby League international, Brisbane, who should be recovered now from his recent back injury. Little fault can be found with the Auckland pack, even allowing for the fact that several other forwards must have close claims. The Probable»s-Possiblcs game should provide good play. The former appear to have the better forwards, and the Possibles the better rear division. It is a pity that Dempsey, the Newton custodian, was not given a run instead of Delgrosso, whose merits are so well known. Dempsey, Olliff (the Devonport half), Brimble, Johns and Sowter (the Shore forward) arc colts that deserve chances in select company. Notwithstanding what criticism might be offered, the teams chosen should perform well, and assist the public to make
up its mind about the qualifications of candidates for the North Island, New Zealand and Auckland sides. The national elect, to oppose the Englishmen in the first Test on July 30, will be announced on Saturday week, on -,he night of the inter-Island match.
