DEATH OF MR. JAMES HISI/OP. STROKE LAST YEAR AT TE KUITI. d'y Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. The deatli of Mr. James. Hislop, M.V.0., O.JJ.Iv, formerly Under-Secretary of the Internal Affairs Department, is reported from Tc Kuiti. Mr. Hielop retired from the Public , Service four years ago. Some eighteen months ago he went on a visit to hU son at Te Kuiti, where he suffered a seizure, which crippled him, and he had been an invalid ever since. Born at North Taieri, Otago, in 1870. Mr. Hislop attended the Mosgiel and East Taieri Schools, and in 188") entered the service of the Railways Department as a cadet. Some years later he became private secretary to the late Sir Joseph Ward, then Postnia-ster-General and Minister of Railways in the Seddon Ministry. When Sir Joseph became Prime Minister in 1900, Mr. Hislop was his executive secretary and general manager of his Ministerial business. In 1012 he was appointed Under-Secretary of the Internal Affaire Department, and he held the position until his retirement four years ago. Mr. Hislop was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1919, and membership of the Victorian Order, fourth class, in 1920. For his services to the French, missions under General Pau and Admiral Gilby, and for bis kindnese to officers and men of French warships which have visited New Zealand, the French Government conferred on him the order of "Officer de l'lnstruction Republique." Mr. Hislop was noted for his work in personally conducting distinguished personages through New Zealand. On belialf of the Government he arranged for tlio reception of members of the Royal Family, representatives of foreign Powers, and many other visitors. He had a wide circle of friends.
