ADDRESS OX PUBLIC SPEAKIXG. The Leys Institute Literary and Debating Union met in the Leys Institute, Pensonby, last evening. The president, Mr. L. Phillips, in introducing Mr. Ernest Aidridge, the speaker for the evening, eulogised Mr. Aldridge's efforts in connsction with the original Ponsonby Debating Union. Mr. Aldridge took for the theme of his address, " The Vitamins of Public Speech."' Speech, he said, was the living link between the speaker and the audience. The art of public speaking could only be perfected by assiduous study, not only of the natural actions of the speaking voice, but by concentrated thought on the specialised subject to be dealt with. lie instanced the magic spell of Wesley, the power of Demosthenes, the living pictures of Socrates, and the vigour and colour of Mr. Lloyd George. They were orators who achieved success by mental discipline, vision, and determination.
