LOWER TRAM FARES.
The suggestion put forward by Percy A. Stanton is very laudable, but he has failed to grasp the idea of the majority of the members ol the Transport Board and the powers that be, and I hope after he has read this he will see that there is a method in their madness. The Transport Board in its nobleness of character is compelling the people for their health's sake to walk. The idea. » to make the people healthy through that almost lost art of walking, and wise by saving money that would otherwise go in tram rides. You see, were the Transport Board to reduce a section ride to a penny and adopt a slogan of, say, "Use the trams—reduced fares," thousands of people who could ill afford a penny would be encouraged to ride. Make the people walk and then when it is necessary strike a rate loan and make those terribly rich ratepayers pay for any deficiency through the loss of revenue. Hoping those who have understanding will understand, H. P. CARLSEN.
