MATAMATA HORSES.

STANDFAST IMPROVED.

RECOVERING FROM INJURY,

ADDITIONS TO MATEER'S TEAM.

Standfast is still sore from hie mishap in the Grsat Northern Hurdles, and R. J. Mateer has not been able to work him since. However, he is showing considerable improvement, and it should not bo long before he is on the track again. The trouble is in his near hind fetlock, which he ricked.

The race he had in the York Welter appears to have worked an improvement in Prince Yal, and he should make up lor practically a season's disappointments now that the tracks are soft. He was i iort of work for the race in question, ijitt has since been showing something like his old form. Lord Val, in the same stable, took no ill effects from his three r.-.ces at Ellerslie, and should be right for another good display when Mr. J. Clothier decides on a trip. At present nothing has been definitely arranged.

Woodful kicked himself again on the northern trip, but in any case he did not handle the heavy going as well as expected. His action may cause his ownertrainer to select races on left-handed 1 racks.

R. J. Mateer has two additions to his string, one a two-year-old gelding by Nigger Minstrel —Koura, owned by Dr. McGregor Grant, and the other a rising two-year-old filly by Gay Shield —Autumn Rose. This half sister to Lucy Rose is a shapely youngster owned by Mr. A. Lennard, of Waihou. It is intended to prepare her for the Avondale Stakes.

Lucy Rose has been returned to her owner for a few weeks.

Gay Lap's full brother l , Merry Lap, is doing "satisfaetoy work on the Matamata track. He appears to be coming much more solid, and should be ready for soring racing. It will be surprising if i his Lapidary—Lady Swift gelding does not win races.

Valroe rand Lady Lulu continue to show improvement, but it is not intended i > race either until the Pakuranga Hunt meeting.

Hark Marble's form at Ellerslie was »iicouraging. and he is being kept up to "is work. He did not have much racing during the season now ending, so that it i.i on the cards that he will show improvement. J. Anderton's team, Knight of Australia, Spearwin and Grand City, is doing ill asked of it. This trainer is not hurrying his charges, which might not be ready until the early summer. Knight of Australia, particularly, has thrived during the winter.
