SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

At a meeting of the Sandringham branch of the League of Mothers last week an interesting address was given by Madame Mabel Milne on "The Temperamental Child."

Mrs. R. E. Baeyertz, of Lucerne Road, Remuera, entertained the following ladies on Saturday afternoon, to bid farewell to Mrs. M. Wyinks, who left by the Aorangi, for Sydney. . The Women's Excelsior Club held a social on Thursday last in the Christian Spiritualist Church, Maekelvic Street. Mrs. Houten presided. Songs were sung by Mosdames Collier, Turvey and O'Shea, a humorous reading was given by Sister Francis and a recitation by Mrs. Hilton. A competition was won by Mrs. Chcavin and Sister Frances. Afternoon tea was served by the hostess, Mrs. Kemp.

The second monthly meeting of -'he Drury branch of the women's division of the Farmers' Union was held on Thursdny. Mrs. Rankin presided. Several members of the Onewhero branch v.cre present and addressed .the.meeting. Mrs. Dyer spoke on the financial exchange of goods and ideas, Mrs. Cutrey on arts and crafts. After afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, Mesdamcs Morton, Hamilton, and Lundon, a soap competition followed, which was conducted by Mrs. Jarvie. The winner, Mrs. Harp, secured 25 points.

An afternoon tea in honour of Miss Gene Douslin was given at the Lyceum Club by Mrs. Harrison Gregory, of Epsom, on Saturday afternoon. Songs sung by Mrs. W. Meek, and pianoforte solo's by Miss Linda de Renzy, added to the enjoyment. A competition was held, the' prize being won by Miss Douslin. Among those present were: Mesdamcs H. Mowbray, Stevenson, N. Miss Valerie Peacocke was hostess at a "linen" tea held at her home, Owens Road, Epsom, on Monday afternoon, in honour of ' Miss Constance Day. The rooms were charmingly arranged with bowls of autumn flowers, and the time was pleasantly passed with songs given bv Mrs W. Meek and Miss Peacocke, and sketches by Mrs. D. MacGregor. An enjoyable dance was given at the residence of Captain and Mrs. W. W. Hcnder. Stanley Point, on Saturday. when the ballroom wais gaily decorated with balloons and streamers. In order to augment the funds of the Devonport Welfare Association a.concert was held in the Parish Hall last evening. Meikle, thanked those who had supported the concert, and said the response would do a great deal toward relieving distress.

The Otahuhu Rugby Football Club held a dance in the Otahuhu Public Hall last evening, when a farewell was extended to Mr. B. Palmer, a member of the club, who has been chosen in the All Black tcain to tour Australia. The hall, which was decorated with streamers in shades of red and black, the club's colours, was filled with friends and wellwishers of Mr. Palmer., A delightful dance programme included two Monte Carlo waltzes, the first being won by Miss A. Willis and Mr. F. Hraley, while tho second was also won by Miss Willis and partner. Dining the evening Mr. J. H. M. Muir, president of the club, made a presentation of a wallet to Mr. Palmer. The arts and crafts circle of the Auckland Lyceum Club held a special meeting at the club in connection with the Women's Efficiency Fair, which is to be held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall near tho end of the month. The members are enthusiastic and many gifts have been received from them, and several entertainments are being arranged to bring in money as a donation from the circle towards the raising of £1000, which is to form the nucleus of a fund for the unemployed women and girls of Auckland. To help defray the cost of any expenses and to stock their stall members of the circle held a competition yesterday for an article under two shillings. It brought forward some delightful exhibits, among them a set of bridge scorers, Mrs. Colson; caps, Mrs. Nutter; powder bowl and striker, Miss Spice.r; nightdress, Miss Lavers; string holder, Mrs. Hewlett. Miss Talbot won the competition, and Mrs. Cleal was the convener.

A social and dance in aid of funds for tho Auckland Cadet Ambulance Division was held at the ambulance station on Saturday evening. The dance was exceptionally well patronised, nearly 300 people being prescnt,'and the decorations and arrangements reflected great credit on the members of the Auckland Ambulance Social Club. The sixth annual meeting of the Mont Le Grand Croquet Club was held in the pavilion- last week. Mrs. Cole, president, presided over a large attendance of members. The secretary, Miss Thomson, read the report, which showed the club to be in a good financial position. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Cole, who is leaving Auckland shortly, for all the work she has done for the club during, her three years as president. Mrs. Colo returned thanks to the members for their loyal support during her term of office. The election of officers resulted:— Hon. patron, Mr. T. McNab; pr'T.ident, Mrs. E. Mrs. H. Webster and Mrs. Stanaway were joint hostesses at an evening held at their home in Surrey Crescent in honour of Mr. Ron Foubister, the Manukau cyclist, who left by the express on Sunday evening en route for Los Angeles, to compete at the Olympic Games. The rooms were prettily decorated witli the. club's colours. Music, dancing and games were very much enjoyed and a pleasant evening was brought to a close with Auld Lung Syne and For He's a Jolly Good Fellow beingsung very lustrously by the boys of the Manukau Club. The Catholic Women's League rooms were attractively decorated last week, when.a bridge drive was held in aid of St. John's Parish, Parnell. The prizewinners were Mrs. Stephen Hunter and Mrs. MeSwceney. The conveners were: Mrs. E. J. McGunn, who wore black sotiple satin and a floral ring velvet coatee, and Mrs. Pilling, in black crepe de chine and ilowcrcd georgette coat.
